The LSU Tigers have won their first national championship, outlasting the Iowa Hawkeyes in a 102-85 victory.
This was the most points scored in a women’s title game, breaking the previous record of 97 held by Texas.
This wasn’t the only record broken throughout the game. Caitlin Clark, who has had a historic tournament and scored a game-high 30 points, broke the record for most points in an NCAA tournament with 180 and the tournament record for most three-pointers made.
However, this wasn’t enough to overpower LSU’s balanced offensive attack. They were led by Jasmine Carson, who had the game of her life with 22 points off the bench on 7-8 shooting. This was a season-high for Carson, who had scored just 11 points this tournament leading up to the championship game.
Alexis Morris stepped up when her team needed it most, scoring 19 points in the second half and finishing with 21 points and 9 assists. She was followed by LaDazhia Williams who had 20 points. Star forward Angel Reese added 15 points and 10 rebounds, marking her 34th double-double, and setting the single-season record. Reese was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after averaging 21 points and 15 rebounds.
This title comes just two years after head coach Kim Mulkey took over the previous 9-13 program. She became the first women’s coach to win a title at two different programs and just the third with 4+ national titles.
